Diary of Anne Frank

A classic story of an innocent and imaginative girl forced to face the realities of life in hiding from persecution in war-time Amsterdam opens at the Studio Theatre in Perth in May.
The Diary of Anne Frank is a stage adaptation of the young Jewish teenager’s actual journal.

Forced to go into hiding after the Nazis occupy Holland, five adults and three teenagers have to share a cramped warehouse attic. There is little food and they are constantly at risk of being detected; no-one can make a noise or use the sink or toilet during the day in case the workers below hear.

“This is really the story of a 13-year-old girl, a once popular and social teen, now trapped in a dreadful situation, isolated from the world, at a time in her life when she is just discovering who she is,” notes director Marilyn Nicholas-Dahan.

The play opens May 16 and runs until May 26, with Thursday and Friday performances starting at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday matinees beginning at 2 p.m.

One Life

One Life is a 2023 film directed by James Hawes.

The film stars Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn as Sir Nicholas, with Lena Olin, Romola Garaj, and Helena Bonham Carter in supporting roles.

One Life had its world première at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2023, and its European première at the 2023 London Film Festival

Synopsis

When a 29-year-old London stockbroker visits Czechoslovakia in 1938, just weeks after the Munich Agreement was signed, he encounters families in Prague who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria. They are living in poor conditions, with little or no shelter or food, and in fear of the invasion by the Nazis. Winton is introduced to Doreen Warriner head of the Prague office of the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia BCRC). Horrified by the conditions in the refugee camps, Winton decides to save Jewish children himself. Actively supported by his mother Babette, herself a German-Jewish migrant who has since converted to the Church of England he overcomes bureaucratic hurdles, collects donations, and looks for foster families for the children brought to England. A race against time begins as it is unclear how long the borders will remain open before the inevitable Nazi invasion.

The rich complexity of life is the emotional focus of the much-anticipated new album from one of Canada’s most accomplished and harmonious trios – Good Lovelies.

The songs on “We Will Never Be the Same,” crafted by the Juno Award-winning ensemble of Kerri Ough, Sue Passmore and Caroline Marie Brooks, are as compelling as the engaging vocal harmonies for which the group has been known for the last 17 years as they mine the complex feelings experienced by women who have come to ponder some of the big questions of life.

This new album is both a return to a more elemental, acoustic-based musical platform reaching back to the early days of the Good Lovelies, as well as an immersive emotional experience crafted by three seasoned songwriters who bring their own real-life stories in all their dynamism and messy complexity to the fore.

“We Will Never Be the Same” is the group’s fifth full-length studio album adding to a widely acclaimed catalogue of recordings that also includes two beloved Christmas releases. It adds to their already popular concert repertoire as they return to tread the boards in venues throughout North America, the U.K., Europe, Australia, and beyond.

It is a testament not only to their artistry but also to their humanity and is an album that will continue to endear this beloved group to fans of all ages.

Stories of Scotland comes to Perth, ON, wrapping Scottish history and comedy into one hilarious and informative package with Bruce Fummey.

Bruce is from the real Perth. Yes, the one in Scotland. He’ll be crossing the Atlantic to Perth, Ontario, to tell stories and jokes in person with a brand-new live show, Stories of Scotland.

Bruce has spent fifteen years performing stand-up and creating Scottish history-themed shows for festivals around the world. A former teacher, he has spent the last few years asking YouTube audiences to “Let me tell you a story” in a series of hugely popular videos, amassing an incredible 200k subscribers for his YouTube channel, Scotland History Tours.

Film and TV roles have followed in the wake of this success.

Nominated for many comedy awards and named Scottish Comedian Of The Year in 2014, Bruce will bring his chirpy, occasionally near-the-bone but self-deprecating style of comedy to spice up some of the stories from Scotland’s past.
